Brice Turang and Christian Yelich hit early home runs as the visiting Milwaukee Brewers topped the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Wednesday evening.
William Contreras knocked in two runs for the Brewers (99-59), who extended their franchise-record win total. Milwaukee needs to capture one of its final four games to reach 100 victories for the first time in team history.
Brewers right-hander Logan Henderson (11-3) allowed one run in five innings in his final regular-season start. The rookie gave up four hits and three walks while striking out three.
Trevor Megill logged a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 30th save.
Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola (7-11) permitted four runs and four hits in six innings, walking one and striking out eight. Bryson Stott doubled twice for the Phillies (87-71), who came into the night with a magic number of two to clinch a wild-card berth.
Turang hit a solo homer off Nola in the first inning and Yelich followed with one in the second to make it 2-0. Both home runs came with the batters behind in the count, as Turang pummeled a 1-2 sinker while Yelich belted an 0-1 cutter.
Philadelphia had the bases loaded with no outs in the second, but Henderson limited the damage to J.T. Realmuto’s run-scoring groundout.
Milwaukee extended its lead to 4-1 in the third inning. David Hamilton drew a leadoff walk and Turang doubled with two outs before Contreras delivered a two-run single to left.
The Phillies had a runner in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings against Henderson and again in the sixth and seventh innings against DL Hall. However, the hosts were unable to push across a run in any of those frames.
That formula repeated in the eighth, as Bryan De La Cruz doubled with two outs against Abner Uribe, but the Brewers’ setup man recovered to strike out Realmuto to end the inning.
The Phillies finished 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10.
