Kansas City Royals second baseman Michael Massey, who is having a strong season, was placed on the 7-day injured list with a concussion Thursday.
The move is retroactive to Wednesday. Massey, 28, hit his head on the turf after falling while making a throw in Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Concussion symptoms developed on Wednesday.
In a corresponding move, the Royals recalled infielder Josh Rojas from Triple-A Omaha. In other moves, the Royals brought up left-handed reliever Anthony Gose and optioned right-handed reliever Mason Black to Omaha.
In 110 games this season — his fifth with the Royals — Massey is hitting .276 with 11 home runs and 44 RBIs. Overall, the 2019 fourth-round pick by Kansas City is a .250 hitter with 47 home runs and 181 RBIs in 468 regular-season games since 2022.
Rojas, 32, has hit .224 (17-for-76) with one homer and nine RBIs in 29 games with the Royals this season. An eight-year veteran, he is a career .240 hitter with 37 homers, 64 stolen bases and 209 RBIs in 667 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2019-23), Seattle Mariners (2023-24), Chicago White Sox (2025) and Royals.
Gose, 36, was a second-round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008 as an outfielder and played 372 games from 2012-16 with the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers. He hit .240 with 12 homers, 57 stolen bases and 69 RBIs.
Gose converted to pitching in 2017 and returned to the majors in 2021 with Cleveland. He underwent Tommy John surgery and missed all of 2023 before returning for three games in 2024 with the Guardians. As a big-league pitcher, he is 3-0 with a 4.78 ERA in 32 innings over 31 relief outings, with 41 strikeouts and 17 walks.
This year, Gose was pitching in the Mexican League when the Royals signed him April 28. In 39 relief appearances with Omaha, he went 2-3 with one save and a 4.89 ERA, recording 58 strikeouts and 29 walks over 46 innings.
Black, 26, a 2021 third-round selection by the San Francisco Giants, has made 17 relief appearances with the Royals this season and has a 4.31 ERA, 19 strikeouts and 20 walks in 31 1/3 innings. Over parts of three seasons with the Giants (2024-25) and the Royals, he is 1-5 with a 5.53 ERA in 27 games (eight starts), with 55 strikeouts and 35 walks in 71 2/3 innings.
