Pete Crow-Armstrong continued his career-high hitting streak and on-base streak on Thursday, when his tiebreaking hit in the 10th inning allowed the visiting Chicago Cubs to finish off a four-game sweep of the New York Mets with a 4-3 win.
Dansby Swanson struck out before Crow-Armstrong’s double to right drove in automatic runner Matt Shaw.
Crow-Armstrong finished 2-for-5 for the Cubs, who have won six of seven. Crow-Armstrong has a 14-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 27 consecutive games.
Michael Conforto, Alex Bregman and Ian Happ collected run-scoring hits within a four-batter span in the sixth to stake the Cubs to a 3-0 lead.
Jacob Webb (2-2) tossed a hitless ninth inning, and Trent Thornton earned his first save with a perfect 10th.
Eric Wagaman delivered a pinch-hit two-run homer in the sixth and Jared Young went deep leading off the seventh for the Mets, who have lost six straight to fall to 8-14 this month.
Nine players had one hit apiece for the Mets.
Cubs starter Matthew Boyd tossed 4 2/3 innings of scoreless ball despite allowing four hits and four walks in his first major league appearance since May 3. Boyd, who struck out four, had been sidelined due to knee and shoulder injuries.
The Mets’ Freddy Peralta gave up three unearned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings.
Peralta didn’t allow a runner into scoring position until the sixth, when the Cubs collected three hits and the Mets committed two errors. Swanson led off by reaching when shortstop Ronny Mauricio bounced a throw to first baseman Mark Vientos. Swanson moved to second on Crow-Armstrong’s groundout and scored on Conforto’s single to right.
One out later, Conforto came home on a double by Bregman, who took third on an error by right fielder Carson Benge. Bregman then trotted home on Happ’s single.
The Mets began rallying in the bottom of the sixth when A.J. Ewing drew a one-out walk and scored when Wagaman, batting for MJ Melendez, produced his first career pinch-hit homer.
