Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Vernon Wells and Aaron Hill both knocked in three runs to help the Toronto Blue Jays beat New York, 7-3, and salvage the finale of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Wells hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Hill matched him in the third, while John Buck added a solo shot off New York starting pitcher Phil Hughes (16-7). Brett Cecil (12-7) allowed three runs on seven hits and walked four over 6 1/3 innings for the Blue Jays, who lead the majors with 208 home runs this season. The loss snapped the Yankees' season-high winning streak at eight games. New York maintained its 2 1/2 game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East after the Rays were beaten by Baltimore on Sunday. Hughes was tagged for six runs and seven hits in six innings for the Yankees, who welcomed back Alex Rodriguez. The All-Star third baseman was activated from the disabled list Sunday after missing time with a strained left calf. He went 2-for-5 with an RBI in his return to the lineup.

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Gordon Beckham and Juan Pierre drew the go-ahead and insurance bases-loaded walks, as the Chicago White Sox staged a four- run ninth-inning rally to take a 7-5 decision over the Boston Red Sox in the finale of a three-game set from Fenway Park. Carlos Quentin stroked a run- scoring double and Ramon Castro added an RBI single during the burst for the White Sox, who swept the set after taking both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. Chicago remained 3 1/2 games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central, after the Twins held on to beat Texas later Sunday. Scott Linebrink (3-1) allowed a run in the eighth but picked up the win. Matt Thornton turned in a scoreless ninth for his sixth save. Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer and David Ortiz added a two-run double for the Red Sox, who stumbled to their sixth loss in eight contests. Jonathan Papelbon (5-6) took the loss and was saddled with his seventh blown save of the year, charged with four runs and two hits with a pair of walks over 1 1/3 innings.

Final Score: Baltimore 8, Tampa Bay 7

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Corey Patterson homered and drove in three runs and Nick Markakis went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in to lead Baltimore to an 8-7 win over Tampa Bay in a back and forth affair to close a three-game series. Brian Roberts went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI for the Orioles, who took the last two games and have won six of their last nine. Alfredo Simon (4-2) got the win in relief with a scoreless inning and Koji Uehara fanned two in retiring the side in order in the ninth to earn his sixth save. Evan Longoria, B.J. Upton and Rocco Baldelli all hit two-run homers in defeat for the Rays, who remain 2 1/2 games behind front-running New York in the AL East after the Yankees fell at home to Toronto. Dan Wheeler (2-2) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs on two walks after getting just one out for Tampa Bay, which still leads the season series, 10-5.

Final Score: Kansas City 2, Detroit 1

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Alex Gordon hit a go-ahead home run leading off the sixth inning, and the Kansas City Royals posted a 2-1 victory over Detroit to salvage the finale of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. The blast to right field came on the first pitch delivered by Tigers reliever Brad Thomas (5-2). Royals starter Kyle Davies (7-9) limited Detroit to three hits over six full frames. His lone mistake came in the fifth inning, when Casper Wells homered to left field.

Final Score: Minnesota 6, Texas 5

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Michael Cuddyer and Denard Span each drove in a pair of runs and Minnesota survived a ninth-inning scare to take a 6-5 decision over Texas in the finale of a three-game series from Target Field. Orlando Hudson and J.J. Hardy also collected an RBI each for the Twins, who swept the set from the AL West leaders and have won eight of their last 10 games. Nick Blackburn (9-9) allowed six hits and two runs over seven solid innings, fanning four with three walks for Minnesota, which maintained its 3 1/2 game lead over Chicago in the AL Central after the White Sox topped Boston. Matt Capps earned his ninth save despite allowing two runs to score and being charged with a run on three hits while recording the final out of the game. Matt Treanor drove in two while Julio Borbon, Cristian Guzman and Vladimir Guerrero added RBI hits in the ninth for the Rangers, who slid to their sixth loss in eight outings. C.J. Wilson (14-6) was tagged in the loss for seven hits and six runs, striking out five but walking four over 5 1/3 frames.

Final Score: LA Angels 7, Oakland 4

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Bobby Abreu drove in three runs and scored three times, as the Angels took down the Athletics, 7-4, to avoid a three-game sweep at the Oakland Coliseum. Abreu and Mike Napoli each homered for Los Angeles, which ended a six-game road trip with a 3-3 mark. Hideki Matsui and Torii Hunter had an RBI apiece. Ervin Santana (15-9) gave up three runs -- two earned -- on six hits over six innings to improve to 5-1 over his last six starts. The right-hander also walked four batters and fanned three. Jeff Larish hit a two-run double for the Athletics, who have dropped five of seven. Vin Mazzaro (6-8) got rocked in 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. The right-hander lost his sixth straight decision.

Final Score: Seattle 3, Cleveland 0

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Russell Branyan homered and drove in two runs to back eight scoreless innings by Felix Hernandez, as Seattle topped Cleveland, 3-0, in the last of four between the clubs from Safeco Field. Hernandez (11-10) scattered four hits and struck out nine with one walk to win his third straight decision. The 24-year-old right-hander has given up just one earned run in the last 45 innings over his last six starts for an 0.20 earned-run average. Michael Saunders knocked in the other run for the Mariners, who earned a split in the series. Jeanmar Gomez (3-3) allowed seven hits and two runs over six full frames in defeat for the Indians, who have lost six of eight.
